The Winnetka Hockey Club (WHC) held its first ever Girls’ Night Out on Saturday, January 14th.
“There were several things we wanted to accomplish,” added WHC Administrative Director and 10U Girls Coach, Tom Gullen. “First, we wanted to get our younger girls in our House League a chance to see a Girls’ game. Secondly, we wanted to get as many girls in our program together at the rink as possible. Third, we wanted the older 14U players to act as mentors to the younger girls. I think we accomplished all three of our objectives.”
The days started with Winnetka’s 12U team taking on the Team Illinois Girls and the 8Us and 14Us taking on their new role as cheerleaders. There were over 200 fans on hand for the game that ended in a 2-2 tie. When the game ended the 14Us took to the ice with the 8Us for a one hour clinic. After a five minute break Coach Mike Glass had the 12Us back on the ice to assist with the clinic that he ran. The evening concluded with all the girls and their families having a pizza party in the lobby of the Winnetka Ice Arena.
“We had close to 25 younger skaters and the feedback has been great; the girls are excited to be a part of the program,” exclaimed Gullen.
