The Hayes-Suburban High School League brought their season to a close with the awarding of the league’s championships in their various divisions.
In Junior Varsity the league saw three championships decided. Homewood Flossmoor and Fox Valley Blue squared off in the top tier battling for the Hayes Cup, the league’s top JV award. The only final to go to the third and deciding game saw Fox Valley Blue take home the cup for a second straight season. The Blue division saw the DuPage Stars and Crown Point do battle with Crown Point winning this one in a sweep of the two game series. In the Green division newcomer De La Salle took on the Irish from Kankakee. This series went to De La Salle winning it in front of a huge home crowd.
Varsity action started off with the Burton (Tier II) Cup. The Leyden Eagles took on the Mid Valley Rampage. Both teams looking to add their name to the cup. It was the Rampage that came out on top winning the cup for the first time in their history. The league wrapped up their championships with the top Varsity prize, the Cougar Cup. Presented to the then Illinois High School Hockey League by the Chicago Cougars WHL franchise the cup is one of the oldest trophies in Illinois High School. The Fox Valley Hawks took on the Renegades of AWFM for the right to claim the cup. Once again we saw a sweep in the best of three with the Renegades taking the cup back after a five year absence. But AWFM didn’t stop there. They went on to also capture the State Championship on March 17th besting Glenbard for their first State title.
