Letter to the Officiating Community from Michael Barrett, IL Referee-in-Chief & Supervisor of Officials

Dear Fellow Official:

I hope this message finds everyone safe and healthy now that another successful and enjoyable season has wrapped up.

Friday night the final high school games were played at the United Center before a rather large crowd. The following officials were assigned to work these games:

Girls Varsity Game
Matthew Bleck, Heather Ruchim and Michael Seery

Boys (Red) Varsity
Gordon Mitchard, David Canon, Cory Lamasky and Jeff Neumann

Boys (Combined) Varsity
Dustyn Rasmussen, Steven Rickard, Daniel Rack and Eric Arrigo.

Every game was competitive between the respective teams and all of the officials who worked the United Center games performed to the highest standards of IHOA and USA Hockey and each of them is to be congratulated for their performance. Well done.

In addition to the officials who worked the games, IHOA provided a support staff for the officials and teams participating in the United Center games. My many thanks to John Oldenburg, Dave Zednik, Eric Cowsill, Randy Krawiec, Paul Ciancanelli, Steve Drews and Bill Fehrman for their efforts yesterday. These volunteers staffed the locker rooms, officials’ room and penalty boxes throughout the day and without their efforts, game day would not have been as successful for everyone.

On another note, at the end of the year, IHOA receives feedback from various leagues regarding the officiating they received in the past season. By and large, the feedback recently received contains very favorable opinions about the officiating provided to the organizations and leagues. I believe these favorable comments are a testament to the efforts and talents of the IHOA officiating community and the IHOA Board to make the games enjoyable and fairly played.

When more than 28,000 games are played throughout the state on an annual basis, there are always bumps in the road, but as long as the officiating community is working to make the game better for all participants, everyone benefits.

As a final note, a friendly reminder that the IHOA Annual Meeting is tentatively scheduled for Monday, May 8, 2017, at 7:00 p.m. at the AHAI Center in Bensenville, Illinois. During the Annual Meeting, 5 Board positions are available for election. I will provide everyone with additional information next month.

As always, thank you for your contributions to the great game of ice hockey.

In the meantime, enjoy the upcoming spring!

Michael Barrett,
Illinois Referee in Chief &
AHAI Supervisor of Officials
