Happy hockey new year! The Metro Girls High School league season is set to kick off this week with the first game being played on September 29, 2017. This year we have 13 teams in the Metro Girls league (one more than last year!). The teams include: Barrington, Evanston, Fenwick, Glenbrook, Lake Forest Academy, Lake Forest High School, Latin School of Chicago, Loyola Academy, Maine Township, Naper Valley, New Trier Varsity, New Trier Silver and Warren.
During the first half of the season each high school team meets for one contest and the league is then divided into two divisions, Scholastic and Founders. It is sure to be a very tight contest again this year to determine where the teams will end up.
The tiers will be decided just before the holidays, and then each team has a home and away contest with every other team in their division in the New Year. The teams then enter the Metro playoffs and championship series. In addition, all eligible teams will compete in the Illinois State Girls Hockey Championships in March.
Last year proved to be a very tight contest with it coming down to the very last game – played the night before the Metro League playoffs – to decide the final team to enter the playoffs! In the end it was Glenbrook versus Loyola for the Scholastic Championship, with Glenbrook taking the top prize, beating Loyola 6-1.
The Founders Cup teams were split into two groups: Founders Cup Gold Championship and Founders Cup Silver. New Trier Silver won the Scholastic Silver Championships, beating Lake Forest Academy 7-3. The Lake Forest Scouts took the Gold Championship prize beating the Barrington Fillies 2-0.
In the Illinois State Girls Hockey Championships last year at the United Center, Glenbrook faced off against Loyola Academy. Glenbrook was named State Champs for the 2016-2017 season, beating the Ramblers 7-3. The game was exciting and hard fought. Enjoy the photos below from last year’s playoffs and state championships!
Good luck to all the girls – play hard and HAVE FUN! Stay tuned for more news from the exciting Metro Girls High School League.
