28th Annual AHAI College Night Explored Playing Opportunities after High School

AHAI conducted its 28th Annual College Night Seminar on Monday, October 9, 2017 at the Hyatt Regency in Schaumburg, Illinois. Mike Mullally, AHAI’s College Night Chairman, gave the crowd of several hundred parents and players a brief overview of the opportunities available after graduating from high school – from men’s NCAA Division I and Division III to ACHA (club) and Junior Hockey before turning the floor over for more in depth discussions from Tony Zasowski, Director of Player Personnel for the North American Hockey League (NAHL) and Mike Perillo, Regional Coordinator (Central) of the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA). Dr. Elizabeth Pieroth, Associate Director of the Sports Concussion Program at NorthShore University HealthSystem and concussion specialist for the Chicago Blackhawks, Bears, White Sox and Chicago Fire, presented on player safety and concussion awareness. After the presentation, parents and players were able to talk directly to many colleges and several Junior teams.

The girls’ College Night Seminar was held in a separate meeting room as the landscape is considerably different for girls wanting to play post high school. Grant Kimball, Head Coach for the new NCAA Division III Aurora University Women’s team and Sonja Novak, (NCAA DI at Princeton University) new Head Coach for the ACHA Division I Robert Morris University Women’s team explained to the young ladies in attendance what they should be doing now if they have expectations of playing hockey after high school.  As former college hockey players, Carla Pentimone (NCAA DI at University of Wisconsin) and Julie Sochacki (NCAA DIII at Utica College) were able to share their unique perspective on what it takes to play college hockey.

AHAI hopes that by educating our young men and women about the myriad of opportunities available to them many will continue to play the great game of hockey past their high school years.
