By Pam Flores

Action Update

The first half of the Metro Girls High School League season is coming along, but there are still quite a few games to be played in December. Play will wrap up for the first half of the season just before the holiday break, with the final few games deciding where the teams will fall within the Scholastic or Founders divisions and where they will compete during the second half of the season. As of this week, the teams in the top six are New Trier Varsity, Glenbrook, Fenwick, Loyola, Barrington and Lake Forest High School. Final results to be announced soon! In the meantime, here are some action shots from a recent game where Loyola faced off against Fenwick over Thanksgiving weekend.

College Commit

Loyola Academy Senior Anne Bloomer, who played with Loyola Academy Girls Hockey team her freshman and sophomore years (2014-2016), was part of Loyola Academy’s signing ceremony that was held on November 8. Anne is committed to play for Harvard beginning next fall.

National Team News

Anne Bloomer and Abbey Murphy were the two Illinois girls named to the 2018 U.S. Under-18 Women’s National team. They will represent USA Hockey as a member of the 23-player roster that will compete at the 2018 International Ice Hockey Federation Under-18 Women’s World Championship, set for January 6-13 in Dmitrov, Russia. Anne also plays for the Chicago Young Americans 19U team while Abbey plays on the Chicago Mission 16U team.

Both girls were members of the 2017 U.S. Under-18 Women’s Select Team that played in the Under-18 Series vs. Canada in Lake Placid, New York and participated in USA Hockey’s 2017 Women’s National Festival. In addition, Anne attended the 2017 Girls Select U18 Player Development Camp. Abbey is committed to play NCAA Division 1 hockey at the University of Minnesota.

Congrats and good luck in Russia Anne and Abbey!

Loyola-New Trier Quad Header Update

On December 3rd the Loyola Girls team beat previously undefeated New Trier Girls Varsity 1-0 in the Quad Header (non-league game for the girls). The only goal was scored by Loyola freshman Bryn Jones unassisted. Loyola’s goalie Kayla Johnson was the star of the game with 31 saves. This was the second Quad header of the year. The first one took place November 19th with New Trier winning 3-0.

The Quad Header is four games played on one day twice a year with Loyola hosting once and New Trier hosting the other time. New Trier’s three boys’ hockey teams play Loyola’s three boys’ hockey teams: New Trier Green faces Loyola Academy Gold, New Trier Blue plays Loyola Academy Maroon, and New Trier Junior Varsity goes up against Loyola Academy Junior Varsity. The fourth game is New Trier Girls Varsity vs. Loyola Academy Girls. It’s a fierce rivalry with many of the players growing up playing with each on the same team and from the same neighborhoods now facing each other as opponents. The second quad header last night was hosted by New Trier at Centennial Ice Rink in Wilmette.

Alumni Fun

On the Saturday after Thanksgiving, the Lake Forest High School Scouts team hosted an alumni scrimmage welcoming back players from previous year’s teams to hit the ice with current players. The girls had a great time re-connecting over the sport they all love!

Stay tuned for more news on the Metro Girls league!
