Honoring our Senior’s

Loyola Academy

The Loyola Girls Varsity Hockey Team celebrated Senior Night at Heartland Ice Arena on February 11 when they faced off against Naper Valley. Seniors and Captains Caty Cusick and Kaela Finegan played four years with Loyola Varsity hockey. On a roster with more freshmen and sophomores than juniors and seniors, Cusick and Finegan have been instrumental in the development of the younger players and the glue holding the Ramblers together, according to Head Coach Ralph Dynek. He said last night, “They’ve taken these girls under their wing and helped bring them to another level. A lot of freshmen don’t know the Loyola way.”

The Ramblers hard work and team effort brought home a win 3-2 against Naper Valley. Caty Cusick will be pursuing a nursing degree and still deciding on colleges. Kaela Finegan will be attending Middlebury College.

Another special moment of the night came when Gabby Ciesla stepped up and reprised her role as back-up goalie. Last year she had to play several games including a state a semifinal game against Latin when Loyola’s goalie was injured. Ciesla is a junior and is the Rambler’s star utility player as she plays forward, defense and goalie when needed.

The Fenwick Girls Hockey team honored three seniors on February 4 when they faced off against Lake Forest High School. Seniors Ava Gawley, Megan Krikau and Jenn Davis were recognized during the evening. Ava is the Captain, and Megan and Jenn are Alternate Captains. These three girls have played together on the Fenwick team all four years during high school.

Ava attends Fenwick High School and is a member of the 2018 AHAI Girls High School All-State Team and was named Fenwick’s Best Defensive Player last season. She is unsure what school she will attend next year, but plans to become a dentist. Ava is also a member of the National Honor Society and played varsity lacrosse for Fenwick.

Jenn attends York high school. In addition to hockey, she plays lacrosse. She plans to study “something in business” at Western Michigan University next year. Megan attends Oak Park River Forest High School and has played three sports throughout her high school years: volleyball, softball and hockey. She is unsure what she will study, but plans to attend either the University of Iowa or the University of Kansas in the fall.

The Friars beat the Scouts 6-0 and the celebration party continued after the game with a pizza party.
