The Hayes-Suburban High School League brought its season to a close with the awarding of the League’s championships in their various divisions. Brooms were out in full force for the finals in both the two Varsity and two Junior Varsity Divisions – all Championship series were decided in two-game sweeps.
JUNIOR VARSITY DIVISION
Two League championships were decided in the Junior Varsity Division. Homewood Flossmoor and Lake Central (IN) squared off in the top tier battling for the Hayes Cup, the League’s top Junior Varsity award. After reaching the finals last season only to fall to two-time champ, Fox Valley, the Homewood Flossmoor club claimed the Hayes Cup with a pair of well-contested 3-2 victories. The Tier II Junior Varsity Division saw the St. Laurence Vikings win their first championship as a member of Hayes-Suburban with their sweep over the Lincolnway Red club to a full house at the Southwest Ice Arena.
Varsity action started off with the Burton (Tier II) Cup. The Lemont/Lockport Spartans took on the Nazareth / ICCP North Stars. It was the North Stars that came out on top winning the cup for the first time in 10 years. The League wrapped up their championships with the top Varsity prize, the Cougar Cup. Presented to what was formerly known as the Illinois High School Hockey League by the Chicago Cougars WHA franchise, the Cougar Cup is one of the oldest trophies in Illinois High School hockey. The DuPage Stars took on the Renegades of AWFM for the right to claim the 45th awarding of the cup. Once again we saw a sweep in the best of three with the Renegades adding their name to a select group of repeat winners by going back-to-back.
The League wishes to congratulate all teams that made their respected final series.
