This past weekend AHAI sent the Boys’ Showcase and Girls’ Showcase teams to compete at the 2018 America’s Showcase at the St. Peters Rec-Plex in St. Peters, Missouri.
The Illinois Boys’ Showcase team, led by Benet Academy’s Jon Grzbek and assistant coaches, Nick Iaciancio (Providence Catholic), Dave Dyson (OPRF) and Steve Silvey (AHAI), was just one goal shy of bringing home their 5th consecutive Showcase title.
The Boys’ team defeated Philadelphia (5-3), Indiana (6-4) and Midwest (3-0) in their preliminary round to earn a spot in the quarterfinals. Illinois continued their 4-game winning streak by defeating Texas (6-3) to advance to the Showcase semifinals where they soundly defeated Philadelphia (7-1) to earn a spot to face yet another Pennsylvania team, Pittsburgh, for the championship title. The championship tilt was tied 3-3 at the end of regulation. Team Pittsburgh ultimately tallied the game winner on a power play goal with 11:37 left in OT.
The Illinois Girls’ Showcase team, coached by Michelle Lichterman and Jill Knobeloch, struggled to find the back of the net throughout their preliminary round games. The Girls’ General Manager, Anita Lichterman, stated, “We had a very young team with lots of ambition, desire and a great love for hockey. All the girls had a great experience, played hard and had a great time. Meeting and speaking to the Scouts in attendance was invaluable to our girls.”
Founded in 1985, the Showcase provides the nation’s premier high school boys and girls players an opportunity to be scouted by high-level programs, so those players may further their hockey careers in prep school, juniors, college, and beyond.
