The Metro Girls High School League Kicks Off the 2018-2019 Season

By Pam Flores

The most exciting time of the year is upon us – happy hockey new year!

The Metro Girls High School league regular season is set to kick off on September 20 and teams are currently preparing to book their tiering round games! This year we have 14 teams in the Metro Girls League (one more than last year!). The new team is the District 211-214 girls’ team. The other teams competing will include: Barrington, Evanston, Fenwick, Glenbrook, Lake Forest Academy, Lake Forest High School, Latin School of Chicago Blue, Latin School of Chicago Orange, Loyola Academy, Maine Township, Naper Valley, New Trier Varsity and Warren.

During the first half of the season each high school team meets for one contest and the league is then divided into two divisions, Scholastic and Founders. It is sure to be a very tight contest again this year to determine where the teams will end up.

The tiers will be decided just before the holidays, and then each team has a home and away contest with every other team in their division in the New Year. The teams then enter the Metro playoffs and championship series. In addition, all eligible teams will compete in the Illinois State Girls High School Championship in March.

Last Year Finals Recap

In the Scholastic Cup semi-finals, Glenbrook High School beat New Trier Varsity 5-3, after a four goal surge in the third period, and Fenwick topped Loyola with a score of 4-0. The finals were held on Sunday, March 11, 2018 and it was a closely contested game between Fenwick and Glenbrook. The game ended in overtime with Glenbrook beating the Friars 2-1.

In the Founders Cup semi-finals, Barrington defeated Warren 7-2 and Latin topped Evanston with a score of 3-2. The Championship Game was held on Friday, March 9 and Barrington beat Latin 5-3.

In the Illinois State Girls High School CHampionship finals New Trier Varsity took the State crown on Saturday, March 24! They faced off against the reigning 2017 Champs, Glenbrook High School, beating them by a score of 5-1. The first and last goals for New Trier were scored by sophomore Kate McLaughlin, the second by sophomore Julia Laden, the third by junior Maddie Babnik, and the fourth by sophomore Mae Olshansky. The sole Glenbrook goal was notched by senior Hannah Jensen.

Here are some fun photos from the championship rounds from last year.
