Mary Ann Robinson, The Heart of Girls’ Hockey in the Midwest

Mary Ann Robinson to Be Inducted into Illinois Hockey Hall of Fame on January 27, 2019

By Anita Lichterman, AHAI Girls Chair

Some of you may not know who Mary Ann Robinson is. I, on the other hand, know her well and have had the pleasure of working with her for the past 15 years. Girls’ hockey has evolved so much in the United States and in our own Central District, which includes Wisconsin, Illinois, Missouri, Nebraska, Kansas, and Iowa. We owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to Mary Ann; her passion and dedication to this area of the hockey community is unmatched. The phrase ‘girls’ hockey’ and Mary Ann Robinson are synonymous.

For many, many years Mary Ann has volunteered countless hours to the betterment of this sport for our female players. She was the Girls’/Women’s representative for the Central District. She also organized and directed the Girls’ Central District Tryout Camps which have sent several well-known female players onto greater achievements. Mary Ann was also the Director of the Girls National Camp in Lake Placid, New York for 10 years. Additionally, she has played an instrumental role in the continued success of the America’s Showcase (formerly known as the Chicago Showcase). Most recently Mary Ann has added the Girls’ High School National Championship Tournament to her impressive list of accomplishments.

A large part of Mary Ann’s life has been spent in hockey rinks, hotels, different states, etc. all for the love of hockey, and especially the female gender. She has watched many female players blossom into wonderful young women, many of whom are still involved to this day in the hockey world in one aspect or another.

Mary Ann’s answers did not surprise me when I asked why she has dedicated so much of her time and effort to girls’ hockey. She stated, “Through the years [to see] the growth of this sport for the female player has been amazing. The Central District (in my mind) is the best district in the country, and I am proud to say I helped!”

Mary Ann went on to say that, “The friendships I have made throughout the world have been amazing, and again without the support of so many people this part of my life would not have happened.”

I asked her if she had any regrets. Chuckling she said, “Regrets…I have a few, but I DID IT THE GIRLS’ WAY! And I thank everyone who helped me along the way!”

Congratulations, Mary Ann Robinson, the Heart of Girls’ Hockey in the Midwest, on being inducted into the Illinois Hockey Hall of Fame!
