Ask AHAI: Tier II Two Choice Rule

By Mike Mullally, AHAI Director

QUESTION: Does the Tier II 2-Choice Rule apply only at the Squirt through Bantam levels? At the 16U level it does not seem to apply as players are free to play for their high school or other 16U programs?

ANSWER: The Tier II 2-Choice Rule applies as long as you play on a Tier II team. All players are permitted to play high school hockey (provided they are part of a high school program) and one other club team. The player is not permitted to play on two club teams.

The age you mentioned (16U) pertains only for attending a high school with a hockey program. Some high school students are as young as 13 or as old as 18 while attending high school. In either case they can play both club hockey and high school hockey provided they attend that high school.
