Community Involvement

Glenbrook Girls Hockey Support Northfield Food Pantry
By Alena Mandell – In the spirit of the holiday season, on December 5th the Glenbrook Girls Hockey Team volunteered at the Northfield Food Pantry in Glenview, Illinois. This was the team’s second year of supporting the pantry by donating their time and energy. The girls helped stock, clean, and organize the shelves, as well as unpack and sort donated items.

The Northfield Field Food Pantry currently serves over 550 families experiencing food shortages in Glenview, Northbrook, and Northfield. Each qualifying family is provided one monthly visit to the pantry where they are provided with both perishable and nonperishable food and hygiene items. The pantry is a vital service to the families it supports. The pantry is supported through donations from local community residents and local retail stores. They accept both financial donations as well as donations of nonperishable foods and household supplies.

As a team we encourage others to donate to the Northfield Food Pantry or one in your area. Families in need depend on these services for their daily meals. Each year the girls have a great sense of accomplishment, pride in their service, and a lot of fun! We were proud that many of our girls came out to support this event.

College Commit

Loyola Academy is proud to announce that Jenna Rekoske and Jayna Park have committed to play NCAA Division III hockey in the highly competitive, rigorous and selective New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC). Jenna will attend Wesleyan and Jayna will attend Amherst.

About this big decision, Jenna notes, “I chose Wesleyan because of the combination of the outstanding academics and the high level of hockey it offers. As soon as I visited, I felt that it was the right place for me. The coaches and all of the players were accepting and excited to make me part of the team. I really don’t know how to explain the feeling I got other than the campus felt like home. I also picked Wesleyan due to the fact that it has a multitude of opportunities in all fields of science due to its masters’ programs resources and research labs. I intend to major in Neuroscience.”

When asked about her commitment, Jayna said, “I chose Amherst because I thought the campus was the prettiest one I visited, and the hockey coach was super nice and supportive. The minute I stepped on campus, it felt right. I also chose Amherst because I felt that it would create the best opportunities for me. I’m uncertain about what I am really interested in – music production and business. I might also want to become a doctor because both of my parents are doctors and they are my biggest inspirations. I aspire to be like the people they have become.”

Loyola Head Coach Rob Messner added, “I have known both of these incredible young ladies for years and have had the pleasure of working with both as young hockey players early in their development and now again at the high school level. Both Jenna and Jayna embody all of what it means to be a student athlete and I could not be prouder of and more excited for both of them.”

Both girls have been members of the Loyola Girls team for four years, and Jayna plays for the Chicago Mission while Jenna competes for the Chicago Young Americans. Congrats Jenna and Jayna!

Latin Varsity Faces Off Against Latin Junior Varsity

The two Latin teams took the ice to battle each other on Friday, December 20. Varsity won the battle and all the girls involved enjoyed the contest!

Alumni News – Player of the Week Honors for Moore and Flores

Warren and Team Illinois alum Jordan Moore is making a splash at the collegiate level as a freshman! She was named the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) “Offensive Player of the Week” during the week of November 26. To quote the league website, she was awarded this designation “…after posting a league-best five points (1G/4A) in St. Norbert’s weekend sweep of Finlandia. Moore had an assist in Friday’s game and then put together a four-point outburst (1G/3A/assist on game-winner) in the Green Knight’s 6-1 victory to close out the weekend sweep. Moore was +6 on the weekend.”

On the east coast, and on the heels of taking her Fenwick team to their first state title last year, Lena Flores is impressing folks in the United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) in New York, being named “Rookie of the Week” in week 4 and week 6. The first award was given after Flores earned her first-career shutout (6-0 win) at Lebanon Valley, making 10 saves and boasting a 1.51 GAA and a .938 save percentage in two games that weekend. In Week 6, Flores made a college career-high 34 saves on 36 shots for a .944 save percentage in a 3-2 win against Saint Anselm and recorded a shutout in the third period of play when the Valiants were outshot 10-3 to help secure the win. Congrats Jordan and Lena!

Stay tuned for more news on the Metro Girls league in January! Best wishes to all for a wonderful holiday!
