Metro Girls League Celebrates an Unusual Year

By Pam Flores, Co-Vice President

What an odd year we have all experienced! Last year ended abruptly and no one is really sure (as of this writing) what the 2020-2021 season will look like. We all feel so bad for the seniors last year…and those that are just entering their final year of high school as they have been the most impacted. Despite all this – there is always something to celebrate.

Metro League Champs Awarded

Despite the unprecedented situation we found ourselves in battling the COVID-19 pandemic and the sad cancellation of the State Championship series, the Metro League season was completed to end the 2019-2020 season. And, it was a highly competitive and exciting series!

The semi-finals featured four tightly contested events. In the Scholastic Cup semi-finals, Latin Orange beat Loyola by a score of 3-1 and Upper Fox Valley topped Barrington 2-1. In the Founders Cup semi-finals, Maine beat Glenbrook 3-1 and Lake Forest High School beat District 211-214 Rebels – in a game that went into two over time periods – by a score of 4-3.

The final championship games were held on Friday, March 6. Latin Varsity beat Upper Fox Valley 4-2 to claim the Scholastic Cup and Lake Forest High School topped Maine by a score of 3-1 to win the Founders Cup. Congratulations to all!

Metro League Jamboree

The Metro League hosted its annual Jamboree on Tuesday, February 25, 2020. The event brought together girls from all teams in the league for a fun-filled exhibition game. The girls truly enjoyed playing with girls from other teams on new lines and facing off in this unique format.

For the first time, the league handed out two Spirit of Hockey Awards to one person from each team who the coaches determined best exemplified the values of competition, cooperation, respect and sportsmanship in hockey. The recipients were Murphy McFarlane, a Senior that attends York High School and plays for Fenwick and Gwen Byrne, a Senior that attends Saint Ignatius and plays for Latin Orange.

During the event, the regular season First and Second Place trophies were also presented to New Trier and Barrington and several of their players and coaches were on hand to accept them.

First-Ever Metro Academic Awards

Also, during the Jamboree, the Metro League announced the league Academic Award Winners for girls earning a 3.5 GPA or better. A total of 143 girls that play high school girls hockey qualified for this award – hockey girls are SMART!

2020 Blackhawk Alumni High School All-Star Team

Congratulations are in order for the six ladies named to the 2020 Blackhawk Alumni High School All-Star Team. This is truly an honor!  The girls include Ellie Kaiser (Fenwick, forward), Jayna Park (Loyola, forward), Kelly Gorbatenko (Barrington, forward), Claire Van Damme (New Trier, defense), Abby Benjamin (Lake Forest, defense) and Ashley Ommen (Naper Valley, goalie). The girls attended a media day at the United Center on February 12 where they got to watch a Blackhawk skate and tour the locker room. They also attended the annual Keith Magnuson Scholarship Luncheon on March 9 where got to mingle with a number of Blackhawks.

More news on the Metro Girls league coming in September!
