JV Spotlight: Daniel Costabile, York Hockey

By Ross Forman – A freshman defenseman last season for the York JV, Daniel Costabile scored his first goal of the season on Dec. 1st, in the championship game of the annual Stevenson Thanksgiving Tournament, helping the Dukes defeat the host Patriots, 5-0.

York outscored its tourney foes 32-4 en route to the title.

“Our team was something special,” last season, Costabile said. “All of us got along really well and as our coach said all year, we were a family. We only lost one regular-season game in regulation-time, but even after that loss it pushed us to work harder and finish out the season as the team to beat. We played numerous hard games against Glenbrook North in the regular-season and in the playoffs. In the end, we beat them for the SHL Championship in a classic double-overtime game 3 victory.”

York’s drive for a state championship was silenced by the pandemic.

Costabile, 15, who lives in Elmhurst, is now a sophomore in his second season of the York JV in uniform No. 16. Costabile, who shoots right-handed, formerly skated for the Elmhurst Chiefs and Chicago Blues.

“Going into the 2020-21 season, we have high expectations,” Costabile said. “We believe we can continue the strong winning culture we built last year. Unfortunately, my season ended in early October when I dislocated my right knee and then realized I had torn my MPFL in my knee. I had surgery and have been recovering for my return to the ice in March. This injury has allowed me to focus on what it is like to support the team off the ice, whether it’s building relationships with my new teammates at practice or other ways.

“A little bit of adversity never hurt anybody, and I am excited to return to the ice with the team within the next few months.”

Costabile is a stay-at-home defenseman who can move the puck out of their defensive zone, and he’s never afraid to block shots.
