QUESTION: I took SafeSport Training 2 years ago. I heard recently that I must take a “refresher” course?

ANSWER: The SafeSport Training is valid for two (2) seasons. Thus, if you took the training during the 2013-14 season, it was valid for the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons and you will need to complete the SafeSport Refresher course for this 2015-16 season. The SafeSport Training and SafeSport Refresher courses are available all season. Click HERE for more information on the SafeSport Training Program.

QUESTION: I keep receiving notices from AHAI that I have not completed the required USAH SafeSport Training. I have already done this and have the Certificate from USAH proving so.  Should I email AHAI the Certificate?

ANSWER: Please do not email AHAI the SafeSport Certificate. The issue here may have two different answers:

  1. All Club registrars must do an update/sync with USAH/AHAI to capture the most current SafeSport (and CEP) data available. If your club’s Registrar did their update/sync prior to your completion of SafeSport (Age Specific Module, CEP Clinic, or Level 3 online Re-Cert) your recent completion will not be visible. The Registrar must do another update/sync to capture your additional data.
  2. If the above steps are taken and you are still not being shown credit, then your Registrar must contact Susan Hunt at USAH: SusanH@usahockey.org to rectify this issue. In this case it is two separate software systems not communicating properly with each other and manual corrections must be made.

QUESTION: I have heard around the rinks that all coaches will now need to take the online USA Hockey SafeSport Training as part of their USA Hockey/AHAI CEP requirements for the 2014-15 Season.

ANSWER: That is true. Beginning with the 2014-15 Season, all USA Hockey/AHAI Coaches must take the online SafeSport Training! For easy instructions to take this free online course, click HERE.

QUESTION: I think my CEP certification is current and at the correct Level. I have taken the Age Specific Module and I have been screened by AHAI. Now I understand that there is a new requirement calledSafeSport?

ANSWER: SafeSport is a new USA Hockey initiative that provides everyone not only training to recognize and reduce circumstances for potential abuse to occur, but also the means and procedures for any person to report suspected abuse or misconduct (including protections from any retaliation or repercussions for such reporting); the procedures and means by which USA Hockey and its Member Programs should respond to allegations of abuse and misconduct. While SafeSport is not mandatory for any coaches in the 2013-14 season, it will become mandatory for all coaches to certify in SafeSport during the 2014-15 season.
